Architecture x photography: a light existing only here

Until January 27, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum hosted an exhibit dubbed “Architecture x Photography: A Light Existing Only Here”. The exhibit itself contained works from extremely talented Japanese and foreign photographers, all centered around architecture and its preservation. The exhibit title, “A Light Existing Only Here”, was thought-provoking and urged you to curiously peek around the walls which were covered with some of the world’s oldest and best architectural photographs. These images had the capacity to transport you to astonishing feats of architecture near and far, such as the Ise Grand Shrine, remote villages dotting the mountains of Italy, and even the ancient Primatial Cathedral of Bogota. Take the photographs of the Italian mountain villages for example: these show time-worn stone buildings have supported life for decades, winding up and down the slopes of the mountains themselves, utilizing every nook and cranny of space to their advantage. All the works exhibited in the museum were so full of intriguing details like this that it was tempting to sit and stare at them all day. The museum is only a short walk from the Ebisu JR station and fosters a very calming, quiet atmosphere, making it an ideal place to escape school-related stress. Aside from its accessibility, the museum is also surrounded by cafes and boutiques, adding to its allure. What a hit!
