Reminisce your childhood fears

In the pitch black of midnight, you are hiding under the bed covers as a child after being forced awake from a nightmare. From what is hard to explain, but it can be felt: the lurking darkness, the monsters silently crawling in the shadows, the toys in the bedroom staring with cavernous, hollow eyes; you assure yourself that they are just an imagination, yet your natural senses say otherwise. Produced by Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco, the award-winning video games “Little Nightmares” and “Little Nightmares II”, available on a variety of platforms including Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, offer those childhood fears to be experienced once more… except this time, everything is real.

Awakening from an eerie dream, Six, the player character of “Little Nightmares”, finds herself in a submersible ship resort known as the Maw. Contrasting her bright-yellow raincoat and small height, Six is faced with vicious creatures, unknown truths, and puzzles to be solved, using her lighter as the only source of illumination and guidance in the enigma. Mono, the player character of “Little Nightmares II”, similarly awakes from a nightmare, however, he is not limited to being inside a ship; this time, it’s the outside world. With his small feet and comforting paper bag over his head, Mono explores a city known as Pale City as he scarpers from the inhabitants, and gradually unravels the secrets behind the Transmission Tower which the entire city is under control of.

With no dialogue in the story, the players are left sinking down into a chasm of mysteries, and it deepens as subtle but relevant details are spotted in the game. Who are the beings in the paintings? What has happened to this corrupt world? Where did Six and Mono come from, and who exactly are they? What is the meaning behind the title of the game? Multiple analyses can be made, but more questions arise as answers are found; an endless cycle of the shadows and monsters dragging the players deep down into their thoughts.

Not only are “Little Nightmares” and “Little Nightmares II” a must-play for horror-lovers, but also to puzzle-solvers and those who favor action. The games require the players to investigate all surroundings to discover hidden passageways or mechanisms, and involve difficult controls of escaping and combating the hideous monsters that chase Six and Mono.

Through their realistic 2.5D graphics, astonishing and imaginative universe, and uncertain background music, “Little Nightmares” and “Little Nightmares II” invite you into a world of horror and suspense. Once entered, there’s no turning back; the days of hiding and running from the unknowns will confront you once again. Nevertheless, this is only an offer to relive your “Little Nightmares”.
