Tokyo Illumination Guide

The best winter illuminations to light up your Christmas.

Roppongi Hills

November 4 2014 to December 25 2014

17:00 to 23:00 (until 24:00 at 66 Plaza)

Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka has become one of the most popular spots for couples during the Christmas season. Starting from the Tsutaya Starbucks on the corner, the entire street glows with LED lights that adorn the trees lining the Keyakizaka. Every half hour or so, the lights change from “snow and blue” to “candle and red.” As you walk down the street with your Starbucks Christmas drink in hand, you will definitely encounter a variety of tourists, couples, and families snapping selfies next to the luminous trees. To get the perfect picture, you can go to the second floor bridge above the Keyakizaka to take the ideal shot of the row of illuminated trees with Tokyo Tower in the background.

In addition to the glowing Keyakizaka, the garden next to the Roppongi Hills arena has its own special illumination. This is also a popular spot for couples to take a stroll during the Christmas season. Roppongi Hills also has a festive Christmas Market next to Toho Cinemas that is filled with Christmas ornaments, hot drinks, and food.

Roppongi Midtown

November 13 2014 to December 25 2014

17:00 to 23:00

On November 13, Midtown started its “Midtown Christmas,” which includes various illumination sights around the complex as well as a Christmas Bazaar in the main building. The Midtown entrance radiates with trees covered in multi-colored LED lights that change color every second. In B1 of the main building, the Christmas Bazaar sells Christmas cards, decorations, gifts, and various other items that will fill up your Christmas list.

The exit in B1 leads to the main spectacle of Midtown Christmas, the lights show. Midtown takes its illumination to the next level with an exciting light show that draws crowds of people clutching their cell phones to capture the magnificent lights on video. You can even grab a coffee at Dean & Deluca and sit outside on the patio to watch the lights, if it’s not too cold. After watching the show, you can walk through Midtown park, which is decorated with a variety of illuminated trees.

The Midtown lights show runs from 17:00 to 23:00 every night.

Nakameguro

November 23 2014 to December 25 2014

From 17:00 to 21:00

Another popular illumination site this year is the “Blue Cavern” illumination in Nakameguro. The river is a popular spot during cherry blossom season, but this is the first time there has been a Christmas-themed illumination. The LED lights ornament the trees for 1km down the Meguro River, creating an other worldly experience.

After snapping a picture at the “blue cave”, as people are calling it, you can stop by one of the many restaurants in along the river or warm up with a cup of hot coffee. Nakameguro’s illumination should definitely be on your “to go” lists this holiday season.
