Mr. Felstehausen discusses SEEDS Nepal with GIN conference participants.

Six GIN club students in grades 6 through 8 from ISSH are getting ready to attend a Global Issues Network conference in Singapore on March 12 through 15. This is the second year that ISSH has sent delegates to a GIN conference.

The six students, Michelle, Chihiro, Risa, Maria, Janice, and Sahana, have prepared a 30- minute presentation on SEEDS, Luci Lights, and the ISSH Mathathon for the conference hosted by Stamford American International School. They will be presenting for an audience of up to 30 students and adults. Conference participants will also attend presentations given by students, teachers, and professors from all over Asia. Mr. Gray and Ms. Shull will be accompanying the students.

The students are looking forward to learning about new issues that are going on in the world. Lisa, a former GIN club member who attended the GIN conference in Singapore two years ago, said, “I feel like it [the GIN conference] really opened up everyone’s eyes to the world and inspired us to take action on global issues ourselves. It made us want to be part of the change in the world.”

Two years ago, ISSH sent only grade 8 students to the conference. When asked why he changed his mind about taking students from grades 6 and 7, Mr. Gray  said, “At the time, the GIN club was still very new. Currently, the GIN Club is only offered to middle school students. We realized that all of the representatives of the conference were going into high school. To have all of the conference members graduate was not effective, so now we have more of a base with the 6’s and 7’s staying with us next year.”

The students are very excited to attend the conference and see what other school students all over Asia have been working on.
