Every Thursday lunch time, over 20 high school students stand in staggered rows in front of a mirror in the MP room. Upbeat, hip-hop music blasts from students’ phones and all eyes are glued to their leader Aishna K. (10) as she dances to the music. This is the start of Sacred Heart’s very own dance club.

The club founded by Aishna and sponsored by Ms. Braun is called Any Body Can Dance (ABCD). The club does hip-hop dance, and has over 20 high school members. The members do not have to have previous dance experience. Aishna created this club from her own interest in dancing. “Dancing relieves stress for me, and I’m sure other people feel the same way, that’s why I created the dance club,” she said. Aishna asked Ms. Braun to sponsor the club after hearing that she also loved dancing.

According to the research conducted by the Japan Association of Physical Education for Women (JAPEW), dance clubs have become very popular in Japanese public and private schools. The ABCD club members are happy that Sacred Heart has caught onto the trend.

Aishna explains that Sacred Heart does not have many activities involving dancing, and by creating this club, students who love to or want to try dancing can have the chance. The club already has many ideas for what they will do this year. “We’re planning on learning some dances that are already on YouTube, and possibly performing in the talent show. Also, I was thinking that the club could choreograph their own dances!” Aishna said.
